This week I began a project. On our webpage you will now find a page currently under construction. Mound City libraries business catalog is currently in its infancy and won’t be the only page like it. The page is the beginning of creating a place to quickly find our local businesses and some basic information about them. I currently only have an address and a phone number, thanks google, but I’m hoping this could turn into a more personal way to see who is up to what. During the time it took to find all of the information I have accumulated, I couldn’t help but notice that some businesses in Mound City didn’t have up to date information on google.
I took the time to call a few of the businesses that seemed a bit off. I found out that there were a handful of businesses that were no longer around but still filled the search feed. In some instances these pages were blocking more relevant results for active businesses. I’ll be exploring how to possibly remove these in the coming weeks. There were a couple businesses that are still around that needed updates to their business pages. I offered to help with correcting or updating their information as a service that our library can provide. I’m currently able to update the Libraries google site, but my knowledge of the more intricate options available are limited. For instance, our google listing still won’t display our webpage in the search results… I’ll continue submitting the link, to what avail?
Another project I have underway involves 97 film rolls currently sitting in our genealogy room. After being referred to a gentleman with the Kansas Historical Society, I learned a lot. I learned that Kansans have access to the 3 most recent years of newspaper digitization and that anyone with internet access has access to newspapers beyond the 3 most recent years of digitization. The KSHS corresponds with ancestry.com to develop their extensive collections. Thanks to my phone call with KSHS we now have easy access to these databases with our genealogy room computer. I still have some work to do with finding out what may happen with these film rolls, and I anticipate writing about it more at a later time.
Have a beautiful day!
